Gratituesday – Coastie Chicks

August 10, 2010

Today’s post is two things: a simple “thanks for being there” and a little plug for one of my favorite websites. As I’ve mentioned before, my husband is in the Coast Guard. He’s an AMT2, which means he’s a second-class Aviation Maintenance Technician. Though it might sound like he’s basically a mechanic, he does many things. From getting dirty in the maintenance shop, to being the watch captain (shift supervisor), to hopping on one of the planes and going on a search-and-rescue mission down here in the Gulf of Mexico, to standing the occasional duty night where he sleeps at work instead of home just in case they need him. I love my husband so very much and we as his family are willing to follow him anywhere that the Coast Guard decides to relocate him. However, following him means leaving behind friends and family and plunking ourselves down in a new city amongst a bunch of people we’ve never met. Jason can quickly acclimate to the new work scene because the Coast Guard does things almost exactly the same at every base. Families don’t have it as easy. Sure, there are wonderful spouses clubs which often times set...

Scholarship Selection – It’s Tough!

May 11, 2010

The local Military Spouses Club that I am a member of offers a number of scholarships each year and yesterday I had the honor of being a part of the selection committee. We received applications from some very deserving, stellar students and it was a pleasure to read about the conscientious young men and ladies who requested the scholarships. When I volunteered to help read through the applications and choose some winners I hadn’t really thought about how much of an impact that would have on the students. Mind you, the spouses club isn’t offering full-ride scholarships or anything. They are each for a modest $1,000 – but to a student with a financial need, that covers at least books and fees for a year. As we started going through the essays and transcripts and discussing the varying merits of each student I found myself to be so thrilled to be in close company with a handful of very dedicated women, many either current or former teachers, who each had a deep well of concern for the students displayed before us. The care shown by these women really touched my heart. One of the scholarships came down to two...

Supportive Friends & Family

April 20, 2010

Today (and all the time) I am very thankful for the supportive friends and family we have. When Jason and I moved our family across the country last summer I was excited but really nervous about whether we would be able to “make it” on our own in an unfamiliar place. Until last summer I had never lived more than 30 miles from my mom, entire family, and friends. In moving we left everyone we knew back in California and didn’t know a soul here in Alabama. I’m so happy to be able to say that we were able to make friends here really fast. Though I miss our California friends and family each and every day, it’s been nice to have people local that we have become close with that we can count on. When my water broke at almost 2:00 am two weeks ago we had my mother-in-law here to stay with Jeremy so we could get over to the hospital quicker and not have to drag Jeremy out of bed. A very good friend of ours, Kim, came over later that day, picked up Jeremy, and let him hang out with her and her three kids for...

Pregnancy Sickness

August 18, 2009

“Morning” sickness my butt! I’ve read all the WebMD, mommy blog, and website posts I can handle. Even the What To Expect… book says it: “morning” sickness is grossly misnamed. It’s all day sickness for me. When I was pregnant with Jeremy, I had absolutely no morning sickness. Almost unheard of for a first-time mom. The only time I was ill was after my doctor prescribed an iron pill separate from my regular prenatal vitamin. I took it in the morning with my bowl of cereal and milk and immediately threw it back up. After a week or so I read that iron reacts exactly that way when taken with iron-rich food or drink, like milk and fortified cereal. Once I began taking the iron at night before bed, everything went back to normal and I wasn’t sick again the entire pregnancy. This time, everything is different. I haven’t thrown up at all, but I’m pretty sure it’s just my strong will holding it back by a thread. I hate throwing up, more than any other part of life, I hate throwing up. When I have a flu bug or any other sickness affecting my stomach, I do it...

Friendship is a terrible thing to waste.

June 23, 2009
Friendship is a terrible thing to waste.

My soon-to-be sister-in-law sent this to me via email. I normally just archive these chain letters, but I really wanted to share it because it reminded me of someone I once knew. One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd.” I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw...

Quick lunch with my honey…

June 16, 2009
Quick lunch with my honey…

This morning I was up and out the door at an unreasonably early hour, awake at 4 am and in the car at 5 am to be exact. In order for Jason to be to work on time, he needs to leave our house at 5:00. Since we are visiting family in Lake Elsinore tomorrow evening and Jason has to stay at work overnight tonight, we decided that I would ride with him to work this morning, hang out til lunchtime, and drive home this afternoon. Tomorrow I will drive back to San Diego to pick him up and we will drive to Lake Elsinore together. This is much better than driving separately all over the place. What I am grateful for this Tuesday is the opportunity to have lunch with my love on a day that I would normally not see him again until tomorrow‘s lunchtime. Also, I was rewarded with a small taste of one of the many ways that shows how much he loves me. Jason drives 95 miles each way to and from work every single day in order to live where we live instead of closer to his base like most of his coworkers. Between...
